Long-time association member, Joe D. Thomas, passed away October 28, 2018 from the effects of a stroke he suffered in June, 2014.  Joe was one of the original members of OATC and NATC back in the early '70s.  Along with several other founding members, he helped formulate the rules that would govern Oregon's tax preparation licensing laws, the first licensing of tax consultants and preparers (separate from CPAs) in the nation.  Among other awards, Joe was most proud of winning the Margaret Sills service award in 1991/1992 and the Leadership NATC award in 1993.  A resident of Bandon, Oregon since early 2010, Joe and his wife, Karen, owned Thomas Tax & Associated Services in SW Portland and Beaverton from 1969 until they retired in 2007.

Joe's many interests included oil and gas exploration in the Southwest, and later, gold mining in Alaska.  He loved fishing, classic country music and was known to have "never met a stranger!"  Joe is survived by his wife of 59 years, Karen, daughters Holly Black, Cecilia Hay, Sarah Bloom and Camille Quinn; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that any remembrance  be directed to the Country Meadows Adult Care Center in Bandon, Oregon.
