Estates and Trusts for tax pros

Dealing with taxation of estates and trusts can be confusing for several reasons:  more than one tax is involved – the gift tax, estate tax, and income tax are all reported on separate returns; estates and trusts are similar, but not identical; there is a pass-through aspect to trusts for income tax purposes; and there is a large number of types of trusts.  This session will sort out the overlapping concepts to bring clarity to this picture.  The presentation will emphasize practical issues for income tax professionals and will highlight provisions of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act that apply to or raise questions about trusts and estates.

Links to the handouts are now in the Westside Chapter Library, and were emailed to all registrants on Friday, 2/22. For late registrants, those same links are displayed on the confirmation page of the registration process. If you missed ALL of these, just drop the webmistress a line at and she will resend them to you  so you can print/download them to your electronic device prior to the class.

Donna M. ByrneDonna M. Byrne is an attorney in Independence, Oregon, where she owns Ash Creek Tax Counseling.  She grew up in Corvallis and studied forestry and political science at Oregon State University before moving east to Minnesota for graduate school, and then further east to Pennsylvania for law school.  Income tax was her favorite course in the second year, so she took more tax courses, which set her up to work as a tax attorney for a large law firm in Philadelphia before jumping ship to become an academic.

As a professor, she taught law school courses on individual income tax, state and local tax, international tax, estate and gift tax, estates and trusts, food law, and tax policy, and supervised a student clinic which helped startup nonprofit organizations.  She has also trained VITA volunteers and was herself a VITA volunteer for many years.

Donna returned to Oregon in 2016 to venture out into the real world. She is an Enrolled Agent and Licensed Tax Consultant as well as an estates and trusts lawyer.  She is also a licensed Zumba instructor and a former downhill ski instructor.
