The TC&JA eliminated the deduction for interest on "home equity indebtedness and lowered the ceiling on "acquisition indebtedness". When a loan is secured by a principal residence but does not qualify (partly or completely) as acquisition debt or home equity debt, we must apply the rules in the "Tracing Regs" of 1.163-8T to determine deductibility. This session will examine the statute and regulations governing interest deductions with particular attention to interest on mortgage loans.
