Bulletin for Mid - Willamette Valley Members

Posted on 3/8/2010 by or in the name of Bill McKinney

Good Day Mid-Willamette OATC Newsletter readers,

It is the Middle of March and I'd betcha dollars to donuts many of you are up to your eye-brows with work, client meetings, interviews, etc and too many of you can wait for the next month to pass. Well, I can empathize with this circumstance you find yourselves in.

My thoughts are with you - and I pray you have the strength and energy to finish out the season well in all ways. I hope you are truly Blessed this year. I also am looking forward to a time of renewal and relaxation at this years Convention in Newport. I have my room reservation at the Hallmark and have scheduled time off with my other employer so I am just about ready for another great time.

Thanks to Jo Anne for continuing to bring us up to date information in regular reminders. Also, thanks to Kari and Tena for their efforts in identifying and helping us with the selection of candidates for this up coming election. I urge you all to be involved, vote and play an active part in our association. Our group is slowly growing and this is a good thing. We can all enjoy the benefits from being with one another at our meetings and gatherings as well as we can learn what to do, or not do, from one another. Hang in there, you can do it.

Don't forget to change your clocks next weekend! Its time to Spring Forward.

See you soon.
Respectfully,
Bill McKinney
President OATC

Denny Purkey

Tribute to Denny Purkey

Submitted by Eric Arnoldus

Cathy Johnson has agreed to devote the next OATC newsletter to Denny Purkey. She is taking articles from anybody who wants to share how Denny made an impact on our lives and the world. Bev and Linda, as usual, have already gotten ahead of the game by writing something, which Cathy can use as is, or expanded.

If you would like to write something about Denny, please send it to Cathy at newsletter@oatc-oregon.org. We'd like to have this be a very special issue, dedicated to our friend who did so much for all of us. I believe a few pictures would be okay, although I haven't asked Cathy yet. I'm sure she'll tell us if she can't use pictures.

Haiti Relief Donations Qualify for Immediate Tax Relief

Submitted by KayDel Marshall, Sr. Stakeholder Liaison Small Business & Self-Employed C/L/D

People who give to charities providing earthquake relief in Haiti can claim these donations on the tax return they are completing this season. Taxpayers who itemize deductions on their 2009 return qualify for this special tax relief provision, enacted Jan. 22. Only cash contributions made to these charities after Jan. 11, 2010, and before March 1, 2010, are eligible. This includes contributions made by text message, check, credit card or debit card. The new law only applies to cash (as opposed to property) contributions. The contributions must be made specifically for the relief of victims in areas affected by the Jan. 12 earthquake in Haiti. Taxpayers have the option of deducting these contributions on either their 2009 or 2010 returns, but not both.

Update on the IRS Return Preparer Review

Submitted by Brian Wozniak IRS SB/SE CLD,

Today (Jan. 4, 2010) the IRS announced the findings of the Return Preparer Review launched in the summer. The findings included proposed recommendations for increasing oversight of return preparers.

These findings and recommendations are the result of an open and transparent discussion of the issues with the tax return preparer community, the associated industry, consumer advocacy groups, and the American public.

After careful consideration of the input provided, the IRS believes that taxpayers, tax administration and the tax professional industry and related service providers will be better served through the implementation of a number of changes.

The recommendations are addressed in detail in the following documents, available online:

Please note that none of the changes are effective for the immediate filing season beginning January 2010.

We will publish extensive guidance on the new requirements in the months ahead. We are committed to helping the taxpayer community understand the new requirements and assisting return preparers comply with these new requirements. Additional information and guidance about the proposed regulations will be centralized on the IRS.gov Tax Professionals page throughout this effort.

The IRS thanks the hundreds of individuals and organizations who took part in this review and looks forward to a continuing productive relationship to implement the proposed recommendations.
