The IRS issued final regulations requiring paid tax return preparers to file a due diligence checklist, Form 8867, with any federal return claiming the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) beginning Jan. 1, 2012. This is the same form that is currently required to be completed and retained in a preparer’s records. The EITC due diligence penalty jumps from $100 to $500, per failure to comply, on returns filed after December 31, 2011. - The IRS is moving into the next phase of the Registered Tax Return Preparer Program by launching the new competency test. Please refer to these three documents for additional information: IR-2011-111, FS-2011-12 & TD-9559.
- CLICK HERE to download the RTRP Candidate Information Bulletin which provides guidance for the competency test that most unenrolled tax return preparers need to complete by 12-31-2013. Competency exam questions that are not answered in the bulletin should be sent directly to Prometric.
